Mandate Strategy, Resources & Recording

Ngāti Whakahemo Mandate Hui Recording – 15 May 2025 (Zoom)

Presenters:  Kerri Kerr, John Koning (Legal Advisor)

This is the full recording of the Ngāti Whakahemo Mandate Hui held online via Zoom on 15 May 2025. The hui includes kōrero on our tribal history and mamae, the loss experienced by our people, the boundaries and elements of our historical claims, and our journey with the Crown to date. It also explains the pathway forward, including the upcoming voting process with ElectioNZ on two proposed resolutions, highlighting the importance of whānau participation at this critical stage. The hui introduces the draft Mandate Strategy and features a Q&A section focused on the Trust Deed, providing clarity and answering whānau questions. We encourage whānau to stay informed and engaged as we move toward settlement together.

Ngāti Whakahemo Mandate Strategy

The Ngāti Whakahemo Claims Trust has put together this Mandate Strategy to outline how we plan to seek a Crown-recognised mandate to represent Ngāti Whakahemo in settling our historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. This is an important kaupapa, and we want to make sure our whānau are fully informed and involved every step of the way. The strategy has been shaped by kōrero with our kaumātua, hapū and wider whānau, and reflects the values of kotahitanga, manaakitanga, and tino rangatiratanga.

While this document meets the Crown’s requirements for mandate recognition, our main focus is ensuring the process reflects who we are as Ngāti Whakahemo. We are committed to making decisions guided by tikanga, keeping the lines of communication open, and ensuring that the voice of our people is heard throughout this journey.
